Sony State of Play is a semi-regular digital event, showcasing the biggest and latest PlayStation news, updates, reveals and announcements.
Since the showcase began in 2019, we’ve seen Sony use State of Play to reveal The Last of Us 2 release date, debut gameplay footage for Ghost of Tsushima, and drop new trailers for games including Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Returnal. So it’s always worth tuning in to State of Play for the latest, big announcements on PS5 games, PSVR games and PS4 games.
The most recent State of Play took place on April 29 and focused primarily on Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. While we don’t know when the next State of Play will take place, we can predict when it might happen and what we expect to see.
When is the next Sony State of Play?
Sony has not set a date for its next State of Play event. The last State of Play (episode 9) took place on April 29, 2021, with the one prior to that taking place on February 25, 2021 and the one before that taking place on August 6, 2020. While last year, the interim between these showcases was filled with some PS5 specific events, typically we see State of Play taking place every three or four months – and ahead of upcoming big releases.
We expect the next Sony State of Play to take place potentially in June. Although the company isn’t taking part in E3 2021, and may not take part in Summer Game Fest, it does typically hold its own showcase during this period – though it may not be an actual State of Play event and may have a different name. In addition, with the tail end of this year distinctly lacking confirmed dates for first-party PS5 releases (outside of the delayed Deathloop), we expect Sony will want to confirm release dates for big hitters such as Horizon Forbidden West.
What can we expect from the next Sony State of Play?
Given that we’re expecting the next State of Play to take place in June (though this isn’t confirmed), we’re hoping that Sony will nail down some release dates – and provide further details – on big hitters that are expected to launch this year, such as Horizon Forbidden West, Ghostwire: Tokyo, Gran Turismo 7 and GTA 5 on PS5.
What was revealed at the last Sony State of Play?
Sony’s most recent State of Play live stream took place on April 29 and focused on Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart. The event showcased 15 minutes of new gameplay footage for the highly-anticipated sequel, which showed off some of Ratchet’s new moves, such as his dash and wall-running capabilities, as well as gameplay of the newly-introduced Rivet, a female Lombax who players will also get to control. The two of them share an incredible arsenal of weapons and gadgets, with both new gear and returning staples of the franchise.
Two indie titles were also shown during the last State of Play: Subnautica: Below Zero and Among Us. Subnautica: Below Zero is coming to PS5 on May 14, 2021 and is targeting 60fps in performance mode, with DualSense implementation. While Among Us is coming to PS4 and PS5 at some point later in 2021, and will even feature a Ratchet and Clank outfit exclusive to Sony console version of Among Us, though no exact release date or any other details (such as cross-play) were given.
